Amplifying Animal Welfare: How Can YOU Champion Rescue Efforts

As a podcaster and coach empowering women to share their stories, I'm always inspired by individuals making a difference in their communities. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking yet again with Melissa Brunson from Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue, and her passion to help rescue dogs and how she supports animal welfare every single day. Today, I want to share some insights from our conversation about volunteering for animal rescues and how you can make a meaningful impact.
The State of Animal Welfare: A Call to Action
In Kern County, California, where Marley's Mutts operates, the situation is dire. With a 40% euthanasia rate at local shelters, it's clear that immediate action is needed. But before we dive into how you can help, let's address some common misconceptions:
- Not all shelter animals have behavioral issues
- "Kill shelters" don't want to euthanize animals - they're often forced to due to space constraints
- Adopting from a "kill shelter" can literally save a life
This reality prompted the formation of the Kern S.A.F.E Animal Coalition, a collaborative effort between local rescues and shelters to tackle the root causes of animal overpopulation and abandonment.
How You Can Make a Difference
You might be thinking, "I'm just one person. What can I do?" The truth is, every little bit helps. Here are some ways you can contribute:
- Educate Yourself and Others
One of the biggest challenges in animal welfare is misinformation. By educating yourself about the realities of animal rescue and sharing that knowledge with others, you're already making a difference.

- Volunteer Your Time
Rescues and shelters are always in need of volunteers. And contrary to popular belief, you don't need to commit countless hours. As Melissa shared, "Volunteering doesn't have to take a lot of time. We try to do vaccine clinics... You can spend four to six hours once every other month if you plan it to help with those types of things."
- Harness the Power of Social Media
In today's digital age, sharing information is easier than ever. Melissa emphasized the importance of social media: "Share the dog stories. Share that information so people see it... There's nothing more powerful than a reshare or a repost or, you know, liking all of that matters."

- Consider Fostering or Adopting
If you're able, fostering or adopting an animal can make a world of difference. Not only are you providing a loving home, but you're also freeing up space in shelters for other animals in need.
The Importance of Spaying and Neutering
One crucial aspect of animal welfare that Melissa highlighted is the importance of spaying and neutering. Many people don't realize the numerous benefits:
- Prevents unwanted litters
- Reduces the risk of certain cancers
- Can lead to longer, healthier lives for pets
- Helps control the pet population in your community

Collaboration is Key
What struck me most about my conversation with Melissa was the emphasis on collaboration. Marley's Mutts is part of a coalition called Kern Safe, which brings together various animal welfare organizations to tackle issues collectively.
Just as these organizations come together to make a bigger impact, each of us individuals can find our way to connect, volunteer, and give back to our communities while serving to help animals in need of rescue, fosters, and adopted homes. Remember, every share, every volunteer hour, and every adopted pet makes a difference. By using our platforms to spread awareness and inspire action, we can contribute to creating a better world for our furry friends. Discover how you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of rescue animals by volunteering for animal rescues. Learn practical ways to get involved and make a real impact.
