The Struggle to Save Every Shelter Dog: Unending Challenges Facing Dog Rescue Organizations

Life deserves the opportunity to live...

I heard those words spoken by Zach Skow of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue in a social media video recently. We are facing an epidemic in the Untied States of dogs being dumped and abandoned, left to fight for their lives in overcrowded kill-shelters. And in California, where I live and the crisis is at its breaking point, the Marley's Mutts organization works to give dogs the opportunity to live.

Dog Rescue

Dog rescue is a difficult job on a good day. But now, as rates of dogs being dumped on the street and at animal shelters around the country continue to rise, the need for rescue efforts seems unending. Many of the dogs currently in shelters will be euthanized, not because they are bad dogs, but simply due to space. There is not enough space in animal shelters for all of the homeless, stray and abandoned dogs who need help. So thousands of healthy dogs are being euthanized around the United States every single day. This is where dog rescue organizations step in.

Dog rescue organizations work with shelters to pull at-risk dogs and place them in foster homes. These homes are those within their rescue groups and networks with people who have volunteered their home and time. Foster homes are vital to rescues being able to pull dogs and save lives. Without foster homes, rescues have no where to place dogs in need.

Dog Foster Homes

Dog fostering is a wonderful way to help dogs in need and make a difference in their lives. Fostering involves taking a dog into your home temporarily, providing them with love, care, and a safe place to stay until they can be adopted into their forever home. It allows dogs to get out of the stressful shelter environment and into a loving home where they can receive individual attention and care. It also gives shelters space. For every dog safe in foster, another dog can be placed in the shelter.

Fostering a dog can be a rewarding experience for both the dog and the foster family. It allows the dog to receive the love and care they need to thrive, and it gives the foster family the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a dog. Fostering a dog does require some time and commitment, but most rescue organizations provide support and resources to their foster families, including food, supplies, and veterinary care.

If you are interested in fostering a dog, reach out to your local animal shelter or rescue organization to learn more about their fostering program. Right now foster homes for rescue and shelter dogs is needed more than ever. If you have considered becoming a foster, now is the time to act.

Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue

Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization based in California that is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs in need. Founded in 2009 by Zach Skow, Marley’s Mutts has grown into a nationally recognized rescue organization that has saved the lives of thousands of dogs.

The mission of Marley’s Mutts is to rescue dogs from high-kill shelters and abusive situations and provide them with the care and training they need to become happy, healthy, and well-behaved pets. One of the unique things about Marley’s Mutts is their focus on rescuing dogs that are often overlooked by other rescue organizations. They specialize in rescuing dogs with medical and behavioral issues, as well as senior dogs and dogs that are considered “unadoptable” by other organizations.

Marley’s Mutts also has a strong focus on community outreach and education. They offer a variety of programs and services to help pet owners in their community, including low-cost spay and neuter clinics, pet food banks, and educational programs on responsible pet ownership. They also help to save the lives of shelter animals with their Pawsitive Change program, which pairs inmates with rescue dogs to help both the dogs and the inmates learn new skills and behaviors.
